Why a denture that once fit stops fitting
It is almost never the denture that changed — it is the ridge underneath it. Jawbone continues to shrink for years after teeth are removed, so the tissue your denture was moulded to slowly flattens. The plate stays the same shape while its foundation does not, and you get rocking, rubbing, sore spots and a growing reliance on adhesive.
That is a normal, expected process — not something you did wrong. Most dentures need attention every few years.
Reline, rebase or repair
- Reline. We add new material to the fitting surface so it matches your ridge again. This is the usual fix for a denture that has gone loose but still looks good.
- Rebase. The teeth are fine but the pink acrylic base is worn or discoloured, so we replace the base and keep the teeth.
- Repair. A crack, a clean break or a lost tooth off the denture. Bring in every piece — do not throw fragments away, and please do not glue them.
Never use a hardware-store or drugstore repair kit. Super glue is toxic in the mouth, sets the pieces in the wrong position and usually turns a simple lab repair into a remake.
When it is worth doing something different
If you are relining every year, the denture is more than five to seven years old, or the lower plate simply will not stay put no matter what, it may be time for a different approach rather than another patch.
The upgrade most patients are happiest with is an overdenture secured by four implants — it clips firmly in place, restores real chewing force and helps slow the bone loss that caused the problem in the first place. A simpler two-implant snap-in is a lower-cost step up. We will tell you honestly which makes sense for your jaw and budget.

How fast can you repair my denture?
Simple repairs and relines are often completed within a day or two, and many straightforward breaks can be turned around same-week. Call us first thing in the morning — the sooner we see it, the sooner the lab can start.
Can I fix it myself with a repair kit?
Please do not. Household and drugstore glues are not safe in the mouth, and they set the pieces slightly out of alignment, which often means the denture can no longer be repaired properly and has to be remade. Bring us every fragment instead.
How often do dentures need relining?
Most need a reline every two to three years because the jaw ridge keeps shrinking. If yours has gone loose sooner than that, or you are using more and more adhesive, it is time for a look.
Does insurance cover repairs and relines?
Many plans cover relines and repairs at some interval, and Denti-Cal and Medi-Cal include denture benefits. We verify your coverage first and give you the cost in writing before we send anything to the lab.
Should I just switch to implant-secured dentures?
If you are relining constantly or the lower denture will not stay in, it is worth pricing. Four implants dramatically improve stability and slow further bone loss. A quick 3-D scan tells us whether you are a candidate.
